Description: Image held by Richmond Library. A head and shoulders portrait of Koch wearing a fur-trimmed robe. Koch served on Council from 1877 to 1885. He was the second mayor of the City of Richmond for the year 1882 - 3. (Richmond was created a municipality in 1855, a Town in 1872, and a City in 1882.) Koch was a professional architect, who designed many buildings in Richmond and the City, Labassa in Caulfied being perhaps his most well-known construction. The notes on the backing sheet housed with the image read: 'John Koch, architect, councillor and mayor of Richmond, was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1855. He was the architect of the R.U.F.S. Dispensary, the Temperance Hall, now the Capital Restaurant, and other large and important buildings on the Hill and elsewhere in Richmond. He designed and built 377 Church St. as his own home. He was Chairman of the local School Board, was elected three times to the Council and was Mayor twice'.
