Description: Image held by Richmond Library. This photograph shows the original iron bridge crossing the Yarra between Richmond and Prahran at Church Street. People, cyclists and a horse and wagon are posed for the photograph on either side of the girders. The bridge was closed to the public at the time of the photograph, with large girders place across it to stop traffic.
The iron bridge was purchased from the British government at the end of the Crimean War and erected to link Chapel and Church Streets. It was replaced by a new concrete bridge which was opened in 1924. The photograph is reproduced from an unidentified newspaper article. The headline at the top of the image reads: 'Recorded Through a Camera Lens'. The caption beneath the image reads: 'THE MISSING GIRDERS.-Photo. of the Church-street bridge, taken in 1914, showing the girders which were placed across it to stop traffic. They were taken down by a self-appointed committee and thrown into the Yarra.'
