Description: 2 sepia photographs, board mounted. George Coates was a pioneer market gardener in Brighton. He arrived in 1855 and by 1868 owned 78 acres in Brighton. A generous bequest established Union Brighton free library at 212 Dendy St, East Brighton. Supporter of Thomas Bent.
