Description: postcard reads..Erected by the Altona Shire Council in conjunction with the Altona Historical Society. To record the location of the mine shaft, 330 feet deep. Situated 45 feet from this point. The discovery of brown coal in this area resulted from efforts between 1881 and 1891 of F. Taegtow. A miner from Altona Germany. From a seam 69 Feet thick, 26,350 tons of coal was extracted between 1911 and 1919. January 1964 Verso reads...The Cairn, Harrington Square. Marks the site of an early Altona brown coal site
