The two-storey building, designed by Bryan Glynne of Howden and McLean, architects and engineers, provides efficient modern office accomodation on the first floor and a spacious restful Library at ground level. All the administrative departments, except the Electricity Undertaking, now occupy the new offices, which are of approximately 5,000 sq. ft. A fully glazed walkway connects the new building with the old offices at first floor level.
The Library has the capacity of approximately 15,000 volumes, with planned extensions to 24,000.
All the usual facilities and fittings for both adults and children have been specially designed by the architect and are freely integrated in an open plan, centred around the charging desk and catalogue. The relaxed atmosphere of the Library is enhanced by the natural timers used in the fittings and the rich parquet floor.
The entry foyer, which serves both the offices ant the Library, is dominated by the striking cermaic wall, designed and executed by Sydney artist, Gerard Haveks. This impressive bronze facade withing the building extends from the green marble entrance floor, up through both floors at the side of the freestanding staircase.
