1900 circa Police Station, Hyde Street, Footscray
ID: 1619
Description: Group of six police constables outside police station.
Included with the photograph is an extract from the Footscray Advertiser, March 14th 1908. "Footscray Police Station - Hyde Street School. Another Footscray landmark - the old Footscray Police Station in Hyde Street - will shortly disappear. From what we can gather the Education Department has finally decided to erect the new infants school room on this site, and propose as the initial step to cut down the rise near Parker street and remove the material to the Smith Street end. The block of land is a fair sized one but not nearly large enough to allow a school to be erected that will provide anything like the accommodation that will be required a few years hence. The Department would have shown wisdom and foresight had they seized the opportunity to secure the land upon which the Methodist Mission now stands. They would then have had a self contained block with room for expansion for many years to come. '
