Description: Photograph Inscription on photo : Front elevation of Alexandra Hotel. Facing Grant Street as it was according to a description supplied by his eldest son Walter who in 1863 when a baby was taken to Thornton and in July 1886 to the Red Gate diggings (Alexandra). The left hand side of the building is labeled Post Office. As reported in the 'Woods point Times and Mountaineer' in 1868 Richard Vining's slab hut shanty was located near the Shire Hall possibly where he sold beer to thirsty miners at a shilling a pannikin until he could afford to build the original 'Alexandra Hotel' on the present site of Briggs Store [currently National Bank 2002]. This hotel was a fine structure for it included a large bathroom and offices to let. Alexandra (Vic.) -- History.
