Description: High resolution TIFF scan of an original photo not held by the archives. The main focus is Nathaniel Lincoln's paint shop at 461 High Street, though parts of Sam Lee's Chinese Laundry at No. 459 and C.T. Wallis's plumber's supplies shop at No. 463 (formerly Ace Cycle Works) are also pictured. Both Nos. 459 and 461 had residences behind the front room shop - the Lincoln family lived there until 1924. A member of the family recalls noting the contrast between the sham Chinese accent used for customers of the laundry (you come back Fliday) compared to the Australian vernacular spoken in the back yard - Sam Lee was probably Australian born, with the accent intended only to reassure the customer that they were getting genuine Chinese laundry services. Lincoln had trained in London as a builder and could turn his hand to many trades. He also was proud of his military experiences in South Africa as noted on the shop signage: Late Kitchener's Fighting Scouts; Late Durban Light Infantry; Late Commander of Chief's Body Gaurd [sic].
