Description: Size: 147 x 236 mm This photo shows a flooded intersection near a row of shops terminating in J. D. Howie's grocer's on the corner. J. D. Howie owned a chain of grocery shops located in various Melbourne suburbs with at least a dozen in Collingwood alone. This one was probably at 408 Smith Street near the intersection of Hotham Street. Next to the grocer's is R. Angus, saddler's. Footpaths are relatively dry but water is rushing along the streets and a number of children are enjoying the excitement of the flood. Many have their trousers rolled up so that they can walk through the water, while their elders stand about observing the scene in a slightly bemused manner. Content of image: Howie, J.
