Description: Size: 165 x 205 mm A large number of people are grouped around Lady Peacock, looking the picture of Edwardian elegance while planting a tree in the Darling Gardens. Lady Peacock was the wife of Sir Alexander Peacock, a member of the Legislative Assembly for a record 44 years and three times Premier of Victoria. His support for the Factories and Shops Act of 1896 brought him almost legendary fame as a humane politician. After his death Lady Peacock became the first woman member of the Victorian Parliament. Everybody is dressed in their Sunday best although the group of children to the left is engaged in a bit of pushing and shoving to make sure of getting their faces in the photo. The fence which used to circle the gardens can be seen in the background and there is a good view of houses in South Terrace.
