Description: Size: 151 x 209 mm Abbotsford House was built in the 1840s or 1850s by John Orr, who came to Australia in 1839 and became an alderman in the first Melbourne City Council. In 1863 it was bought by a group of nuns and became the nucleus of a growing cluster of buildings forming the Convent of the Good Shepherd until demolished in 1902. The photo shows a substantial dwelling surrounded by verandahs overlooking a well-stocked garden.
