Description: Size: 171 x 253 mm A photo taken from the town hall tower. In the foreground are shops near the Gipps Street intersection, including A. E. Canning's cash grocer. The shop with the striped verandah posts is a tobacconist's/barber's and has an ad for Havelock tobacco on its side wall. A few doors beyond is the Baptist Church (the building is still there although much altered). In Gipps Street is the Royal George Hotel and Godfred Lauer's bakery. Note the tall flagpole in the front garden of the house next to the Royal George. On the west side of Hoddle Street are a number of houses and various shops including T. F. Beard's stationer's, none of which exist today due to the widening of Hoddle Street. In the distance are Henry Street, Langridge Street and Islington Street. The two large buildings in Islington Street are the Smalley and Harkness boot factory and James Hood and Company, maltsters. Content of image: Canning, A.
