1880s - 90s? Alpha Cottage with bootmaker
ID: 9180
Copyright: Image held by Collingwood Library Org ID: CL PIC 329
Description: Size: 101 x 150 A similar photo to number 328 but this time one daughter and the little boy are not in the frame, two other boys have appeared, and the father is also there. Leaning on the picket fence with his shirt sleeves rolled up and his apron on, he has obviously just left his work bench to have the photo taken. Although Collingwood was a major centre for large boot factories, this kind of cottage industry was also very common. This family looks as though it is struggling to make ends meet, but there are lace curtains billowing at the windows and the garden is well tended. Content of image: 'Alpha Cottage' footwear industry
Subject: shoemakers
