Description: Size: 176 x 305 mm An air of festivity marks the opening of the bowling green which was in the area behind St Philip's. This is still an open grassed area today and the timber club house seen at the rear of the photo (housing both the Collingwood Quoits Club and the Collingwood Bowls Club) is still standing although used for a different purpose. The opening ceremony was performed by the mayor, councillor Lufford, and the club president's daughter is shown throwing the first jack, a task which she seems to be finding somewhat difficult due to the narrow cut of her skirt. It would seem to have been one of those warm spring days (the date was 4 October) as several women have light weight white dresses, some men are in shirt sleeves, and the sun is shining. Many of the men are sportingly attired in striped blazers and boaters while the women are being aided in guarding their complexions by the fashion for large hats.
