Description: Size: 303 x 407 mm View from the far side of the Yarra of several early Collingwood industries in the area between Victoria Street, Walmer Street, and the Yarra. The house in the background belonged to Peter Nettleton who in 1861 established the woolworks which made use of the ready supply of water flowing past in the Yarra. This is an example of a not uncommon phenomenon in the early development of Collingwood industry, that of the owner living next door to his works. The bluestone and brick building on the left was a woolshed and has the unusual detail of cast iron columns where one would have expected stone. The building on the right was at one time George Coppin's brewery and at others another woolshed. In the foreground are market gardens. The Alma Woolscouring Company took over the business in 1920 and continued operations unti 1980. Since then this area has been the site of a welcome development with old buildings saved from dereliction, restored sympathetically and utilized as offices and restaurants. If you haven't already seen this project, I strongly recommend as a pleasant and interesting outing that you take a look around and then go for a walk along the Yarra.
