Description: Size: 303 x 407 mm In the 1850s Peter Nettleton built a stone structure close to the Yarra from which wool washing was carried out. Wool had to be immersed in water for some time. In this photo a number of workers, protected by corrugated iron roofs, are handling wool out of the water in large wicker baskets. The remains of this structure can still be seen in the series of bluestone retaining walls, the wharf at the river's edge, and the ramp leading to higher levels, all of which have been incorporated into the new landscaping. In the background is Nettleton's house (on Victoria Street), a large shed and Coppin's brewery. Another house is just visible to the right.
