1919 - 1922 Johnston Street bridge

Photographer: Beveridge, William Copyright: Image held by Avis Freeman Org ID: CL PIC 510
Description: Size: 64 x 88 mm Keen amateur photographer William Beveridge, like many photographers before him, could not resist the photographic opportunity presented by the sweep of Studley Park Road down to the river crossed at a sharp angle by the iron bridge, framed by a eucalypt and leading the eye to Abbotsford on the other side of the river. Unlike earlier photographers who usually liked to include the picturesque buildings of the Convent of the Good Shepherd, he has angled his shot to take in the Yarra Falls spinning and knitting mills which were completed in 1919. A motor bike with side car is proceeding down the hill while a horse pulling a covered cart has paused on the way up. Houses and shops and the Early Bird Hotel in Johnston Street can be clearly seen.
