Description: A view of the area near the intersection of Clarke Street and Johnston Street. On the corner is the Early Bird Hotel, a single storey brick building dating from 1865. Behind it is a cluster of timber buildings belonging to C. Lister's Crown Brewery, and the photo has evidently been taken on behalf of the brewery as there are seven or eight workmen posed in front. To the left is a large two storey bluestone house. Several houses on the west side of Clarke Street, and in the streets beyond, can be seen fairly clearly. Johnston Street is lined with post and rail fences, and another fence in the foreground runs down towards the river.
