Description: Postcard of Johnston Street looking down the hill east towards Wellington Street. The first shop on the left is Lewis Granger, a dealer, and the second is E. Cronin, cab proprietor. The sign above the verandah reads 'Wagonettes for Hire' and there is a right of way between the two shops allowing vehicle access. A few doors down is the Council Club Hotel, while the building further down the hill with the writing on the side wall houses J. P. Le Pine and Son, undertakers. On the right is the George Hotel, the Magpie Cutlery Works, the vacant land covered in advertising hoardings, including an ad for suits on easy payments. At number 51 is a produce merchant (chaff, wood, etc), probably T. E. Long, and below that a barber, a hotel (the Engineers Arms, later known as the Limerick Castle), and a dairy on the corner of Wellington Street. More shops can be seen east of Wellington Street, but not clearly enough to be identified. A cable tram is making its way up the hill, and there are a number of men, women, children and babies in prams on the footpaths.
