Description: Size: 203 x 254 mm Shows the front path and entrance to 'St Helier's', Sir Arthur Snowden's residence at 4 St Helier's Street Abbotsford. There had been an earlier house called 'St Helier's' built close to the river by Edward Curr in the 1840s and the street took its name from this house. The Snowdens' house took its name from the street. Snowden, born in Kent in 1829, came to Australia in 1852. A solicitor, he married Elizabeth Jarvis at St Peter's (Eastern Hill) in 1856. In 1858 they settled in a four-roomed cottage in St Helier's Street where they had two daughters. In 1864 he participated in the establishment of St. Philip's Anglican church in Hoddle Street and remained an office bearer until his death in 1918. Elected to Collingwood Council in 1868, he only lasted a year due to strong disagreements with pro-industry councillors over his support fot the Yarra anti-pollution laws. He was elected to the Melbourne City Council in 1891 and was Lord Mayor from 1892 to 1894. In 1895 he was knighted and entered the Victorian parliament from which he resigned in 1904. The photo shows the luxuriant front garden, a gravel path, and part of the brick house, which has obviously been extensively re-modelled or re-built since the era of the four-roomed cottage.
