Description: Size: 203 x 254 mm A view of the building site with the Johnston Street bridge in the background and Johnston Street shops to the right. The timber corner building with the extensive verandah is the Early Bird Hotel, later re-built and currently (1991) known as 'Studley's'. The two shops advertising Fry's chocolate and Empire tobacco have been re-built since the time of this photo but the pair of two-storeyed houses are still standing virtually unaltered. Work is proceeding apace on the building: carpenters and bricklayers have stripped off their jackets and hung them on the scaffolding.
