Dimmeys First Store

Description: Image held at Richmond Library. Two children are standing in the street in the foreground of the photograph. A number of people, presumably customers, are waiting in front of the store in the background. Initially a draper's store, the business was purchased by Dimelow and Gaylard in 1900. Four years later, with a change of ownership, it became Dimmeys, the nickname used by local shoppers. The original building burnt down in 1906, the clock tower was built in 1914 - 15 and the copper dome replaced a ruby ball in 1939.
For further information consult local history files RFC 505 and RFC 507. The image appears to be a photocopy of the orignal photograph. The caption above the image reads: 'Dimmeys First Store' and the caption below the image reads: 'Destroyed by Fire 10th Nov. 1906'.
