Description: Image held at Richmond Library. A close-up view of a man splicing a cable/s. Melbourne's first cable tram line opened in 1885 and operated from Spencer St Station to Richmond. Cable trams consisted of two units - a dummy from which the driver (gripman) operated the gripper which allowed the tram to move, and a trailer car or saloon. Engine houses housing the machinery moving the cables were located along the route. One of these stood on the north-east corner of Bridge Rd and Hoddle St. Electric trams and buses replaced cable trams; the Richmond line closed in 1927. For further information refer to John D. Keating's 'Mind the Curve' and to Jack Cranston's 'The Melbourne Cable Trams 1885-1940'
