Description: Image held at Richmond library. This photograph shows a woman, a boy, and a man standing outside the corner door of the hotel. The building is two-storey, with a verandah and large windows. A glass lamp is suspended from the corner wall. A horse and four-wheeled cart are pulled up outside the hotel.
According to Richmond library's local history file RFC 550, the Royal Hotel's first licensee was J. Howe, in 1854. The compiler of the file gives the source as The Argus newspaper, July 19th, 1854. A check of the Sands & MacDougall Postal Directories shows Benjamin F. Marsh to have been the hotel's proprietor from 1872 to 1873.
